Abstract:
The San Joaquin Valley Protected Open Space Database is a GIS inventory of lands protected primarily for open space values by an ownership interest of a governmental agency, non-profit, or private organization. It tracks information on who owns these lands, the type of ownership (fee or easement), primary uses, and levels of public access. The database was developed by GreenInfo Network through funding provided by the Great Places Program of the Information Center for the Environment (ICE), University of California at Davis.
Purpose:
The San Joaquin Valley Protected Open Space Database is intended to serve as a local and regional data source on current protected lands. Appropriate uses include open space and conservation planning, land management, land use analysis, and outreach and education.

By county, each USGS 7.5 minute quad was analyzed for protected open space areas based on (1) available data, (2) parcel ownership data, if available, (3) visual reference documents such as aerial images, Google Maps, Thomas Brothers Guides, and other hardcopy maps. Once protected open space areas were identified, they were verified by one or more additional sources. Parcels encompassing the protected open space areas were then selected, using spatial selection or visually. Parcels were then verified, as possible, by ownership records. If parcels were unavailable, the boundary from the digital data source was used, or the area was digitized based on Public Land Survey (PLS) lines. All boundaries were compiled into a single polygon shapefile (the interim Holdings shapefile). Attributes were transferred from source data layers where possible.

The interim Holdings shapefile was then examined for shape conflicts, such as polygon overlaps and edge-matching, and adjusted as needed to resolve conflicts. Generally parcel boundaries were deferred to as most accurate. Where parcels conflicted (e.g., on county edges), polygons shapes were examined for consistency with other data layers and reference maps/imagery, and the more consistent parcel layer was accepted as true. Final shapes were split by county, if necessary.
