These data identify the areas (in general) where final critical habitat for the California Condor occurs. Critical habitat for the species consists of the following 10 units: Blue Ridge, Tulare County Rangelands, Kern County Rangelands, Tejon Ranch, Mt. Pinos, Sespe-Piru, Matilija, Sisquoc-San Rafael, and Hi-Mountain-Beartrap East and West.

To provide the user with a graphical representation, viewable within a GIS, of the boundaries of critical habitat as described in the Federal Register.

Process description: The Boundaries of the final rule designating critical habitat were defined by reference to section, township and range as established in the Public Land Survey System (PLSS). Biologists with the USFWS selected boundaries along section lines such that known roosting and nesting areas and supporting foraging areas for the species were encompassed. For this data set, the legal description of critical habitat, as found in Federal Register Final Rule (41 FR 41914) was used to create this dataset in ArcMap 8.2 based upon an existing PLSS grid obtained from the State of California (formerly the State's Stephen P. Teale Data Center). The PLSS grid obtained from the state was reprojected from Albers NAD 27 to UTM Zone 11 NAD 27 prior to digitizing the boundaries described in the Federal Register.
